Channel Islands National Park

Friday, July 25, 2025 - Friday, August 1, 2025 -- $TBD ★

Off the coast of California lies an other worldly group of islands called the Channel Islands National Park. Isolation over thousands of years has created unique animals and plants over 100 of which are found nowhere else on Earth. Few people visit the park because it can be difficult to get to and as such is one of the least visited National Parks in the system. Because of this, you can expect solitude if you seek it. There are no services such as food stores or gear rental shops (well, they do have scuba and kayak rentals) on the islands so we will be largely self-reliant.

Our entire trek will be spent on the Island of Santa Cruz. We will visit Scorpion Beach, Potato Harbor, Smugglers Cove, Montanon Ridge and Chinese Harbor and we'll kayak or snorkel in the Pacific Ocean one afternoon. Expect many unobstructed views into the Pacific Ocean and on the island itself.

What a great way to spend part of the Summer. If you want to day-hike the Channel Islands, this is the trip for you. Why not join us for an unforgettable week?

Weather

Weather is always an important concern when hiking. Expect daytime hiking temperatures in the high 60s / low 70s with nighttime temperatures around 50. However, be prepared for the possibility of day temperatures as high as 90 and as low as 40, with a chance of passing afternoon thunderstorms. Here is the historical weather for the National Park. Be prepared with lots of sun protection and water containers that add up to 8 liters of capacity.

Difficulty

The trails in Acadia are well marked and well maintained. However, many of them can be rocky and/or steep in places. In fact, in some areas you are walking on gigantic rock slabs or rock staircases and the trail is marked by rock cairns in the shape of an 'A' (yes, really). There's usually clear and solid footing with rock or even iron staircases in some places. Carrying only a day-pack will make the trek much less strenuous, but on some days expect a fair amount of climbing and descending sometimes steep trails.

Cost

$TBD per person double occupancy. Here, double occupancy means that you will share a hotel room with another trip participant. You will also be responsible for transportation to and from Los Angeles Airport (LAX), as well as personal equipment, restaurant meals and any gratuities for guides. You may also be assessed parking charges if you leave your car at the hotel all week. Shuttling to the park and parking at the ferry dock may also be an option.

Covered expenses include 1 hotel night, 6 nights in campgrounds, 6 days of trail meals, airport ground transportation, ground transport to/from Ventura, ferry transportation to and from Scorpion Harbor and Prisoner's Harbor, National Park permits and excellent guides.

Tipping: In order to keep our prices competitive with (and hopefully favorable to) other outfitters, we shamefully can’t pay our guides as much as we think they deserve. Like most other guiding services, we rely on the generosity of our participants to make up this shortfall by tipping the guides. While tips are not required or expected, if your guides have served you well, please consider a gratuity so they can continue living their extravagant lifestyles of eating powdered meals, sleeping in the dirt and pooping in smelly outhouses and small holes they've dug.

Notes

This is a hybrid backpacking / day-hiking trip. It is primarily day-hiking / base camping. However, we will carry full (heavy) packs a total of about 7 miles spread over 2 days

This trip will includes your choice of kayaking or scuba
