Sequoia / Kings Canyon

Sunday, August 3, 2025 - Monday, August 11, 2025 -- $2100 ★★★★

Sequoia / Kings Canyon National Park is truly a land of Giants. The General Sherman Sequoia Tree is the largest tree in the world (by volume) and is between 1800 and 2700 years old. We will see immense and rare giant sequoias in one of their few remaining groves, as these old growth redwood behemoths have fortunately been preserved. You will walk through groves of leviathan trees that are centuries or even millenia old and can grow more than 300' tall.

Kings Canyon is a beautiful Sierra woonderland with towering mountains, thundering waterfalls and rugged pulchritude. The solitude in this wilderness is inescapable. Furthermore, we will hike several miles along the famed John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail, possibly meeting several long distance hikers along the way (you will smell them before you see them).

Our journey will begin in Sequoia National Park near the iconic General Sherman Tree. We will walk among the giant sequoias and then head deep into the remote backcountry of Kings Canyon. We'll do a grand loop (partially known as the Big SEKI loop) from Bearpaw over to the John Muir Trail to Kaweah Gap (Hmm, never heard of it) to Little 5 Lakes, over Black Rock Pass at 11,700' and back to Bearpaw before ending our journey in Sequoia National Park.

Come walk through time in the amazing canyons of Kings Canyon. We may see black bears, big horn sheep, yellow bellied marmots, mule deer, pika, short tailed-weasels and the ubiquitous golden mantled squirrel, so why not join us this summer?

Weather

Weather is always an important concern when hiking. Expect daytime hiking temperatures into the 80s at times and nighttime temperatures in the 40s & 50s. However, be prepared for the possibility of day temperatures in the 90s and night temps as low as 30. We will almost certainly experience a violent afternoon thunderstorm or two (they last 90 minutes). Here is the historical weather.

Difficulty

The trails through Sequoia / Kings Canyon National Park are well groomed with good footing. However, elevation gain and loss can be dramatic. Furthermore, most days are relatively high mileage for a Fitpacking trip, making this trek difficult at times. But it will also be rewarding, with incredible continually changing scenery that few ever get to see.

Cost

$2100 per person pre-trip single occupancy, post trip double occupancy. Here, double occupancy means that you will share a hotel room with another trip participant. You will also be responsible for transportation to and from Fresno, CA (FAT) as well as personal equipment, restaurant meals (typically 2 dinners) and any gratuities for guides.

Covered expenses include 2 hotel nights, storage fees, 6 days of trail meals, airport transfers, ground transportation to/from/within the National Park, park permits, park entrance fees and awesome guides.

Tipping: In order to keep our prices competitive with (and hopefully favorable to) other outfitters, we shamefully can’t pay our guides as much as we think they deserve. Like most other guiding services, we rely on the generosity of our participants to make up this shortfall by tipping the guides. Gratuity can comprise a significant and important part of a guide’s compensation. The industry recommended gratuity amount is 10-20% of the trip cost. Gratuities are always optional and based on level of satisfaction but generally account for 30-60% of a their income through gratuities. Fitpacking supports tipping to the greatest extent possible while remaining tactful and professional. Guides are not permitted to solicit tips in any way other than doing an exceptional job supporting and providing exceptional customer service to our participants. If your guides have served you well, please support them with gratuities so they can continue living their extravagant lifestyles of eating powdered meals, sleeping in the dirt and pooping in smelly outhouses and small holes they've dug.

Notes

Both the first and last days of this trip are longer hikes than typical Fitpacking trips.
